Support for Teenagers

Supporting our Daughters

Many of us are embracing and experiencing the benefits of complementary therapies for ourselves, but what about our daughters?

More than ever, the pressures on our girls are enormous.  From school stresses, social media peer pressure, hormonal changes and sleep deprivation, they are already experiencing many of the stressors and anxieties usually reserved for adulthood.  It is therefore important to support them through this stressful period, to ensure a smooth transition to adulthood.

Complementary therapies such as Hormone and/or Clinical Reflexology can be extremely useful for adolescents to promote their overall hormonal health and to foster a sense of self ownership towards their future wellbeing.

What a valuable gift to give them!

Why regular Reflexology is beneficial to your teen daughter

Regular Clinical and Hormone Reflexology sessions assist in forming deeper, more regular sleep patterns and promote relaxation to alleviate stress and anxiety.

  • Sleep research shows that teens need on average 9 – 10 hours of sleep a night.  There are multiple factors in a teenager’s life that may contribute to sleep deprivation, including hormonal changes, hectic after school activities, screen time, light exposure from electronics and an over-aroused brain.  Lack of sleep can lead to poor concentration, mood swings, decreased attention, depression, and reduced physical or academic performance.  As sleep is vital to our wellbeing, the benefits of a regular sleep pattern can create a healthy immune system and lead to a sharper more focused mind.

  • Stress and anxiety are now a large part of teenage lives. Whether it is in the form of peer pressure, social media demands, high expectations (from teachers, parents or themselves) for academic or sporting success or hormonal changes to the body, it can be an overwhelming experience for some teenagers to cope with.  Clinical Reflexology can help relieve some of that anxiety to help young people deal with healthy stress more effectively.

Why not make the transition from childhood to adulthood a smoother journey for our teenagers? Regular Clinical Reflexology can help to avoid the build-up of stress and anxieties, or to manage it when levels are at a peak.

How to support your teenage daughters’ hormones

Your daughter will go through many changes during puberty.  One of the most significant milestones is her first period.  Periods are part of her menstrual cycle, which affects hormone levels in her body.

Most girls get their first period when they are between 10 and 15 years.  The average age is 12, however every girl’s body has its own timeline.  If your daughter has not started her period by the time she turns 16, it is a good idea to talk with your GP.  There are many reasons why periods have not started by then and medical assessment can rule out any serious concerns.

Although you may not be able to predict when your daughters first period will arrive, there are some clues that it will start soon.  Typically, a girl gets her period about 2 years after her breasts start to develop.   Another sign is vaginal discharge which your daughter may see or feel on her underwear.  This discharge usually begins about 6 - 12 months before her first period arrives.

Your daughter’s period happens due to hormonal changes in her body.  For the first few years after a girl starts her period, her menstrual cycle may not be regular.  As her cycle is still establishing, this is normal at first and it may vary between 3 – 6 weeks.  Length of bleeding can also vary between 3 - 8 days however, within 2 – 3 years menstrual cycles should be more regular.

Whilst the cycle is establishing itself, a girl may feel emotional and/or physical symptoms that can occur before or during her period.  These symptoms can include cramping, mood fluctuations, sadness, anxiety, bloating or acne.  Generally, these will resolve within 1 – 2 days of bleeding, however for some, symptoms may persist longer. This can affect other areas of a girl’s life and may result in refusal to attend school or generally not coping.

The onset of periods is one of the biggest changes’ puberty brings for girls.  You can help your daughter cope with this change by being prepared and ready to support her through it.  By empowering your daughter to understand what is happening to her body, she will be able to make healthy choices that positively impact her future.
